Summer Project - Drinking In Britain

For my summer project entitled "Drinking in Britain". After realising there were so manyangles to take in this project, I felt more drawn towards illustrating the effects of alcohol. I researched the long term and short term effects and this is what I came up with.

I created a life size piece which pictures a man drinking alcohol. I took some inspiration from those medical/educational diagrams you find in those school science text books, and also from an incredible illustrator/typographer called Oscar Wilson (check him out).

I created the dark background by photcopying newspaper articles that show the negative side of alcohol and collaging them together, working over them with paint, charcoal and oil pastel to give it some texture and atmosphere. The figure is made of brown paper and each part of the body is done using black marker pen on red painted paper and stuck over the top.

The illustration itself shows the effects of alcohol, and highlights all the body parts and vital organs that are effected when large ammounts are consumed. Such problems such as liver damage, heart disease and mental health problems are illustrated here.

Originally I intended this to be used as some sort of educational campaign against binge drinking but scaled down and photoshop filtered, it could still look good as a magazine or newspaper illustration as I have demonstrated in the last picture.

Visit to V&A - Grace Kelly:Style Icon

Some (fairly poor quality) photographs I took at the Grace Kelly exhibition in London. I love everything to do with old Hollywood glamour and watching old movies so this exhibition was a must for me. I really loved it; the exhibition featured Grace Kelly's costumes from movies such as High Society to Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window.

There were also a lot of her personal wardrobe on display, such as an Yves Saint Laurent "Mondrian" dress and a gorgeous purple evening gown by my favourite designer of all time, Givenchy. The last two photos are of the gown she wore to accept her Oscar award for "The Country Girl" in 1955, along with the actual award itself, and the stunning wedding dress she wore when she became Princess Grace of Monaco.

The only bad feeling about this was the fact that next to each dress there was a photograph of Grace Kelly wearing it, and she looked obviously looked more stunning wearing them than the mannequins did!

"A Tissue!" - Design for Kleenex Competition

My design for a competition to design the box for Kleenex Tissues. This was done using Photoshop.

Personal Work - Masquerade Carnival Series

A recent series of personal illustrations. These were inspired by vintage circuses, masquerade costume, and victorian side shows.

These pieces are on display at the Room52 Giles Art Gallery in Boston, Lincolnshire, where I will have my very first exhibition on the November 1st - November 15th 2010. These pieces are also for sale so if anyone wants one, get in touch.

You can see all of my digital illustrations here:

Mother's Day Card

A card I designed for my mum for Mother's day. This is a digital collage using Photoshop.

Valentines Card

I hated all the cards in the shops so I made my own. My boyfriend is obsessed with Muse, so I made a card using the lyrics from our favourite Muse songs. The only bad part is I think he didn't know which way to read it!

Personal Work - Steampunk Series

A recent series of personal illustrations I produced in my spare time. They are near enough completely digital which is what separates it from the work I've been doing at uni. I am trying to find the balance between traditional and digital media and so far haven't found a way of doing it and feeling like I've put my all into it. But anyway, most of my personal work is inspired by social subcultures and fashions. In this case I was inspired by steampunk, a sub culture of people who dress and have a love for the victorian steam-powered era, which was introduced to me by my good friend Tayla.

These pieces are on display at the Room52 Giles Art Gallery in Boston, Lincolnshire, where I will have my very first exhibition on the November 1st - November 15th 2010. These pieces are also for sale so if anyone wants one, get in touch.

Character Design Project - Pickles

For the character design project the brief was to create a new character for Monster Munch. It was this project that made me realise how much I actually hate commercial character design. So I did rubbish in this project and they didn't like my creepy little friend here, but I do so nevermind.

Character Design Project - Sketchbook Experiment

A creepy little experiment I did in my sketchbook for the character design project. It wasn't related in any way to the actual brief, but I really like it. I liked the idea of creating a little book - a parody of a children's book yet for a much older audience. I have my good friend Tayla to thank for twisting my mind and making me want to create a sick, twisted, killer clown. Thanks bud :)

Character Design Project - Charcoal Experiment

As part of a character design project at university, we were asked to make a life size drawing of someone else in the group. We were given toy animals (I know, isn't uni fun!) and had to exchange the human head for the animal's head. We HAD to use charcoal - my worst enemy - but I think I did pretty well.

P.S - I'm not sure what the animal was, I thought it was a buffalo but the lecturer kept saying it was a bison..aren't they pretty much the same thing?

Walsall Art Gallery Visit - Gordon Cheung

Photographs of work by Gordon Cheung. I felt really connected to his work as he uses all sorts of techniques and layers them together (like painting over collage) which is something I really like doing in my work. I really liked the vibrant colours he uses too.

Drawing Practice and Media Techniques

A university project to encourage creativity and improve drawing skills and ways of using contemporary media. We were asked to choose a human body part and draw it over and over from different angles and using different media. Here are a few of mine. I didn't do so well in focusing on the quality of drawings but innovative media usage was challenging and fun!

Sense Of Place

For a university project entitled "Sense of Place", I chose to create an animation of atmospheric bathroom scenes. This came from a personal memory; when I was younger and in the bath my older brother would run in a switch the light off (just to be nice) and I'd be terrified. To this day, I have a fear of not knowing - e.g I would never go in the sea at night (mind you, who would?!) I don't like the feeling of things that could be lurking in the dark...and I don't like the big duck on the logflume at Alton Towers, all of which I'm sure stems from this traumatic childhood experience.

You can view the full animation here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pEhnuNZy-I
